Day 4

The sunset is at about 10 pm and the sunrise is at about 400 am. I woke up about 6, looked out the window and found chunks of ice floating all over. we were suppose to go up Tracy arm but the Captain heard from other ships that it was blocked with ice so he went up Endicott arm. There were chunks of ice that looked like pellet ice floating in a glass- there was ton of it. Icebergs and like 3 waterfalls on each mountain on each side. If you listened the ice chunks sounded like a fresh poured soda, fizzing and popping from years of compressed air in the ice being released. The water is the color of jade and the sun was shinning making beautiful reflections.

We saw some sea otters and a whole bunch of bald eagles. We found out that their wing span is anywhere from 5-6.5 feet. We cruised up the arm for about an hour and a half and stopped at the glacier that blocked the pass between the mountains. It was HUGE. About 3000 ft high think...as tall a 10 of the tallest building in SLC. The ship amazingly turned a 180 and went back down the arm the cruised to Juneau.

In Juneau we looked around the town and wished we had more time there. It was a fun place with lots of fun shoppes and the Red Dog Saloon complete with girls ;). We had to hustle back to the ship and get our coats, and boarded a bus that took us to the marina was where we boarded a boat to go whale watching. I really thought that it would be like the trip we went on in Boston (which took us 2.5 hours to go one way to see a few humps and and be shuttled back). This time we went out for about 25 mins during which they served lunch and then we slowed and the captain said there was activity ahead. We coasted into a nice stop and saw the spray from blow-holes and then they came up out of the water.... Orca (killer whales). There were 2 or 3 pods of them all around us. They were flapping their fins and rolling up out of the water. The crew said that only about 10% of the tours get to see Orcas. WOW!! Totally amazing!!! We watched and followed them for about 30 mins.

We then went into a narrow pass to find some humpback whales. We passed a buoy where some Steller sea lions were warming in the rare sun on top of it. There were some in the water waiting for a turn and nipping that the ones already on the buoy.
We went about 3 minutes further and there was a pod of 2 or 3 Humpbacks and saw parts of them, their humps and blow holes and just after the Captain said we had to head back, the last sighting of the evening one of the whales showed us his whole tail as he dove. It was a wonderful evening.
